An earlier date where a lot of what would make Coltrane's sound is still embryonic. The harmonic implications of chord substitutions in thirds (the process that would lead to 'Giant Steps') aren't quite in practice yet, but you can hear a few 'sheets of sound' solos. The titles are also some of the first to display any thematic interest in Africa. And although the sound is a lot more downtown Manhattan than tribal, that interest would run through jazz until the late-70s. Tommy Flanagan, Wilburn Harden, Curtis Fuller, more. Tracklisting: Dial Africa, Gold Coast, Tanganyika Strut, Oomba, Once in a While.
