Holcomb was discovered, unrecorded mind you, by the 60s folk revivalists & it's his voice that spawned the phrase 'high lonesome sound' to describe the bluegrass harmonies like that of the Stanley Brothers. In comparison to most bluegrass though, Holcomb is dirt-covered & rickety. His unvarnished reedy singing was inspired by Baptist falsetto choir parts & blues numbers he heard others perform when travelling around. A taffy-pull sense of timing, & clawed up accompaniment on banjo, fiddle, guitar & harmonica. Tracklisting: Swanno Mountain, Comb Hotel Burned Down, Wandering Boy, Hook and Line, Barbara Allen Blues, Married Life Blues, Fair Miss in the Garden, Omie Wise, Willow Tree, Boat's Up the River, In the Pines, Fox Chanse, Coney Isle, Charles Guitau, Free Little Bird, Baby Let Your Hair Roll Down, Little Bessie.
