Otis' early sides matched the satin Ellington sound of 5 or 10 years earlier with jump blues singing & blue material. Proto-R&B, in other words. As big band tours became economically untenable, Otis opened his own club & discovered just about every talented performer to come through the black side of Los Angeles. He also got electric guitars & honking saxes to replace the woodwinds. Little Esther, Big Jay McNeely, the Robins, Big Mama Thornton, Jackie Wilson, Hank Ballard, Little Willie John- they all had stints with Otis when he wasn't busy DJing, running for assemblyman, or holding talent shows. Tracklisting: Harlem Nocturne, My Baby's Business, Round the Clock, Preston Love's Mansion, Boogie Guitar, Little Red Hen, Hangover Blues, New Orleans Shuffle, If It's So Baby, Rain in My Eyes, I Found Out My Troubles, I'm Livin OK, Ain't No Use Beggin, You're Fine But Not My Kind, Turkey Hop Part I, Turkey Hop Part II, Blues Nocturne, Cry Baby, Mistrustin Blues, Dreamin Blues, Cool & Easy, Wedding Boogie, Sunset to Dawn, Honky Tonk Boogie, All Nite Long, Deceivin Blues, Three Magic Words.
