Elly Kasim is from Padang, a place where the houses all have wings on top that's about 900 miles north of Jakarta, in mountainous West Sumatra, Indonesia. She began as one of many singers in the band Kumbang Tjari (it means something like 'Beetle Search'). At the time bands from Padang had mostly been Latin-influenced big bands & had to move to Jakarta to secure recording contracts. In 1963, Kumbang Tjari broke up when their leader decided to quit music & become a gym teacher. Elly prevailed & became the queen of Minang pop. Here she is backed by the Zaenal Arifin Combo, one of two or three house bands (not unlike the Stylers) that recorded behind nearly every singer. Though Elly's zipping around on a vespa on the cover, the songs are languid, airy & aren't far from folk tunes. Lots of slow melodies that bong around like xylophone lines, bells, single note guitar patterns. Tracklisting: Es Kutjang, Ka Batang Aray, Santuang Palalat, Karupuak Sandjat, Karupuak Sandjat, Bananti di Fusaro, Lubuak Buajo, Gantuang Kambuik, Mantjogoklah, Rusuah Hati, Kasiah di Bulan Tadjauh, Ratok Dagang, Pataruah Mamak.
