Introductory but nicely done overview of the Chess label. The Chess brothers began by running a club on the South Side of Chicago, and the muddy bottom end, brash horns & clipped electric guitars immediately made the label a national name. Notes make a good point about how interconnected mid-sized labels of the 50s & 60s were. In 1959, Harvey Fuqua was the leader of Chess band the Moonglows & head of the label's A&R. He was dating Etta James, who recorded for Modern, & Marvin Gaye was a member of the band. When Fuqua broke up with Etta, he moved to Detroit & married Berry Gordy's sister, landing Gaye on Motown. The set takes you through some of the wilder cuts from the late 60s (Dot Ashby, Rotary Connection) as well. Tracklisting: Howlin Wolf-Evil, Bo Diddley-Another Sugar Daddy, Etta James-Tell Mama, Stereos-Stereo Freeze, Soulful Strings-Burning Spear, Ramsey Lewis-Party Time, Eve Barnum-Please Newsboy, Dorothy Ashby-Soul Vibrations, Little Milton-More and More, Lorez Alexandria-Baltimore Oriole, Soul Stirrers-Why Am I Treated So Bad, Phil Upchurch-The Way I Feel, Buddy Guy-She Suits Me To a Tee, Rotary Connection-Memory Band, Etta James-You Got It, Muddy Waters-I Just Want to Make Love To You, Laura Lee-Mama's Got a Good Thing, Sonny Cox-The Wailer, Gene Chandler-In My Body's House, Fontella Bass-Leave It in the Hands of Love.
