Gardiner became a bass player for Studio One in the late 60s, recording for the Heptones, Marcia Griffiths, Larry Marshall, Junior Marvin, etc. He was playing fat hotels & had previously toured, plus done music for a local theater production. Actor Calvin Lockhart (he played the character 'Biggie Smalls' in the Sidney Poitier/Bill Cosby/Jimmy Walker extravaganza 'Let's Do It Again') was from Nassau, had decided to try movie making, & so thought Gardiner a natural choice. The kill-whitey lyrics don't seem too incongruous on the reggae cuts, but Gardiner also throws in some slow soul ballads with shimmering strings. In case you can't get down with that, liner notes deftly point out that it's "reggae, not reg-gay". Tracklisting: Every Nigger Is a Star, You Just Got to Be in Love, Rough & Tough in the Ghetto, Ghetto Funk, Home Again, Funky Nigger, Deadly Sting, Rats in the Ghetto, Every Nigger is a Star, Negril.
