Ives' fascinating musical model of simultaneous marching bands (which he turned into string orchestrations that, under the right baton, can shimmer against & transparently through each other for a vibe like the summertime dusk) is probably the biggest discernable influence on early Van Dyke Parks. Straight ahead, but the premiere readings from the mid-50s that incorporate a fair amount of dissonance, especially in the solo piano performances near the end. Tracklisting: Three Places in New England, Symphony No. 3 The Camp Meeting, Piano Sonata No. 1.
