Palestine's idea, the one which made his name as a minimalist, is that long bouts of repetetive hammering on the different harmonics of a string will make overtones start to peel off & buzz around like a pack of flies. He worked up his first performances at CalArts in the early 70s, locking himself away in a room with one of the wealthy school's deep-toned Bosendorfer pianos. One disc of this, plus two more which apply the technique to harpsichord & a 12 person string ensemble. Great notes by Ingram Marshall, who allows Chaz, in the full bloom of his considerable character, to compare conducting the string ensemble to an orgy.
