Phil Cohran Armageddon lp

new
Preposterously themed operatic suite from Chicago that begins with Paul Robeson style bellowing and moves into large ensemble jazz with intense solos & lots of congas. As on some of Cohran's other records, he usually lets one guy hold everything together when things break down for solos. Usually it's bass player Louis Sutterfield, but one cut here he uses some sort of electric keyboard instead. Under the influence of Sun Ra & Islam, Cohran has the notes say ridiculous stuff like "the frankiphone represents time itself" and "In the long long ago, a very enlightened people of a far away galaxy experimented with correcting mutational deficiences. These experiments went awry and resulted in mental problems." Tracklisting: Motherless Child, Creation of the Beast, The Warning, The Window, Armageddon.
