Eugene Chadbourne says (and why wouldn't you believe him) that when this record came out people were a little dickish about it, because it seemed like a throwback to NYC high energy free jazz. Easier to see now how Brotzmann quickly moves into toneless streaks & burps. He pulls Harry Miller (Ogun records, Manfred Mann) & Louis Moholo (Brotherhood of Breath) into his world as much as possible, and they play indefinite, detached swells as often as they do more typical roller coaster rolls.
