Hampel was a German vibes player who once had Eric Dolphy stay over at his house and when they jammed, Dolphy suggested they switch instruments so he could try out the vibes. Dolphy complimented Hampel's bass clarinet playing, and so Hampel began to take it up in concert as well. He soon hooked up with another bass clarinet player who was Dutch, and they put together a little touring group. Benny Goodman saw them play & recommended them to some honcho at NBC tv, who put them on the air in the USA long about 1965. It led to the recording of this record, where Hampel also met his future wife, the amazing vocalist Jeanne Lee. His 2nd lp as a leader, this got 4 stars in Downbeat upon it's release (impressive for the avant/underground status) & the brough-ha-ha allowed Hampel to start his own label & issue his furthest out record 'The 8th of July'. A wide variety of changing instrumentation on this one, with some raucous blowing from Breuker. Piet Veening & Pierre Courbois make up the rhythm section. Tracklisting: Assemblage, Heroicredolphysiognomystery, Make Love Not War to Everybody.
