Always looking for the most universal music in every sense of the word, Ayler moved away from free jazz in order to search for a style that took in the changes that had been happening in R&B & rock. Just before his suicide, he played a few concerts in France which revisited free jazz proper, and although the band was a combination of earlier & later personnel, it worked & left everybody smiling.
