The funky Czech answer to Shirley Bassey. Kubisova's version of 'Hey Jude' is the one you hear playing as the tanks roll in during 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being'. During the years leading up to the Prague Spring, she and 2 other pop stars (Helena Vondrackova & Vaclav Neckar) had a supergroup trio called the Golden Kids, and they promoted dancing & uptempo styles that were previously frowned upon by the cultural censors. Kubisova's heroine was Aretha Franklin, and with tons of horn players pulled from jazz & classical settings, she managed to record some really funky, forceful & full-throated arrangements. On her solo records, she often chose songs with protest-tinged lyrics, so after 1970 she was prohibited by the government from performing in public (after they accused her of posing for porn photos).
