The entirety of Alan Lomax's famed southern journey. Lomax had just returned from a long stint in the UK, and Atlantic Records sent him (along with his much younger girlfriend he'd picked up in London, one Shirley Collins) on a 2 month tour to record whatever he bumped into. Legend has it that Lomax decided to go because he was infuriated by the pretensions of the burgeoning Greenwich Village folk scene, who on the influence of the Harry Smith anthology behaved as though folk music was unreachable archeological treasure. There are many musical discoveries here, but a few outshine the rest: Fred McDowell, the stripped raw appalachian sound of EC Ball & his wife Orna. The 'White Spirituals' record alone can permanently adjust your attitude to gospel music. On heavy vinyl & with a booklet that preserves Lomax's charming-yet-stiff notes.
