Late 50s styles that eventually melded into salsa & boogaloo as Puerto Rico became flooded with money & consumer toys from the United States. Singer Ismael Rivera instantly revolutionized the music scene by fronting a non-white band from the rural coast at the end of the era of urbane & whitey ballroom dances. He played a specifically afrocuban rhythm that he learned growing up, the bomba. Several of his early hits were written by his mom, and the band was made up of friends from his neighborhood. His impact was so overwhelming that the song made up on the spot at his funeral is now sung for every fallen Puerto Rican musician. Mon Rivera is also a pretty sick vocalist, and it's not for nothing that they call him the king of the tongue twister. Sometimes you get clear precursors to boogaloo, and other times you can hear a strong afrocuban or big band influence, or just a guy imitating a goat as the plena rhythm makes it's influence felt even amidst the mountain musicians who play jibara.
