For all intents & purposes this is Ayler's take on the large ensemble collective improv fad that was sweeping through jazz. He's the de facto leader & the band is his regular trio of Gary Peacock & Sunny Murray with Don Cherry, John Tchicai & Roswell Rudd added. An interesting halfway point between the two-bands-at-once style of Ornette's 'Free Jazz' (1960) & the balls-out-no-leader style of Coltrane's 'Ascension' (1965). Michael Snow's movie was performed to the music rather than the other way around, & was based on a reproducible silhouette that he spent several years inserting into as many media, contexts & changing situations as possible. Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Roswell Rudd, Gary Peacock, Sunny Murray. Tracklisting: Don's Dawn, AY, ITT.
