Time for a brand new batch in this grand series, showcasing the stellar 78 collection of Ian Nagoski. If you don't know him, Ian is the onetime owner of the True Vine record store in Baltimore, MD, and also compiled the 'Black Mirror' collection for Dust-to-Digital. This volume is split between two of the great pre-war singing voices of the European continent. Pastora Pav??n Cruz, the crying femme flamenco singer known as La Ni??a de los Peines, got her nickname (translation: the girl of the combs) from frequently inserting a chorus whose lyrics translate to 'my combs are made of cinnamon'. She began performing at age 8, never leared to read or write, & spent most of her life in Seville, a living link between the traditional flamenco of the 19th century & the opera revival period. She often improvised, dabbling in every substyle of flamenco (Seguiriyas, soleares, tangos, bulerias, cantinas, malaguenas, cartageneras, tarantas, granainas) and even invented one of her own called the bambera, which decorated Andalusian folk songs with flamenco ornamentation. Sotiria Bellou was an openly bisexual rembetika singer famed for her addictions to gambling & alcohol, who once threw acid in her husband's face after he beat her up. She was arrested multiple times during the hungry & difficult years many Greeks faced during the Italian & German occupations, for her unruly behavior as well as her flamboyantly leftist politics.
