By the time of his huge 50s films, Kurosawa did not believe in heavy soundtrack arrangements, wishing sound to be a single element in a web of narrative that built up over the course of a film. But it was Fumio Hayasaka who taught the master that a lush, elegant (and very Western) soundtrack could make a good counterbalance to a scene with a stoic mood or a plot that included terrible dread. During the filming of 'Record of a Living Being' Hayasaka died of tuberculosis, and his illness leading up to his death greatly influenced the despairing turn of the film. Hasayaka's student, Masaru Sato, not only finished the score when he died, but went on to bring orchestral touches nipped from Verdi & even jazz to Kurosawa's visuals. Tracklisting: Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Record of a Living Being, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress.
