3 major scores by the man who taught violins to stab. Herrmann had worked his way up through the orchestra system of radio and came to Hollywood with Orson Welles, wrote the music for 'Taxi Driver' and had dabbled with electronic instruments, but will always be best known for the psychological complexity of his Hitchcock soundtracks. You could write a whole thesis just on the range of tempi Herrmann uses in his prime: and those innumerable 16th note ostinatos somehow never seem busy. Here you get plenty of 'em, as well as those stately, langorous motifs that wrap around, oh say Kim Novak, like a fur coat. As both Benny & Hitch were judgmental, brittle, fastidious & exacting, the two gents eventually came to disagree. It was over whether 'Torn Curtain' would have a poppy score (which the studio wanted, to keep things up to date). Benny scoffed rather than giving in. Score listing: The Wrong Man, Vertigo, North By Northwest.
