Before he was Willie Nelson's pot buddy in the 70s, Jennings was a scuzzy East Texan with way too much pomade in his hair. He began his career by being a sub bass player for Buddy Holly- in fact he missed being in Holly's plane crash because he was too new to the band to get a seat. And all through the sixties he scraped around at the lower rungs of the Nashville system. You can hear him here, slowly finding his peculiarly throaty voice over the course of ten years. Chet Atkins' production is probably a bit velvety for Jennings' pill-popping personality, but when it works, the difference provides tons of dramatic tension. Duet with Lee Hazlewood near the end stands out too.
