It was Pierre Nourry, an obsessive record collector, who first flashed on how good Django & Grapelly were at some off-bandstand jams. He convinced the band to play a concert, booked it, solidified the lineup, got Django to get out of bed in time to hit the stage, etc. And when it seemed to work, he shopped around & got a German label to book session time for them. One of the engineers famously got quite worried when the band, after making a wax test recording to check levels, launched into a wildly different version of the song ('Dinah') as soon as the acetate was spinning. Having never heard a band improvise, poor guy thought they were playing the wrong song. Tracklisting: Dinah, Lady Be Good, I Saw Stars, Lilly Belle May June, Sweet Sue Just You, Confessin, Swanee River, Ultrafox, Avalon, Smoke Rings, Clouds, Believe It Beloved, Chasing Shadows, I've Had My Moments, Some of These Days, Djangology.
