The songs sometimes break down completely so that Porter can iron every last non-nuance out of an abortion, dying alcoholic, or poverty-stricken sacrificial lamb. The music is a backdrop, but an impressively lush one, as every trembling hand and false eyelash is underlined by a sound effect or a sliding steel guitar.
