Looks at first glance like some greatest hits for the uninitiated, but no! Meticulously collected set of fairly serious rarities and side projects, swank notes, the whole nine yards. Really highlights sides of the band's history that are missing from their albums too. Early singles by Bob Markley and the colorfully monikered Lucifer and the Peppermints have clearly sprung straight from the devilish head of Kim Fowley. The Byrds influence felt only mildly on 'Volume One' runs unchecked on Michael Lloyd's early project without Markley called the Laughing Wind. There's a sweet Left Banke cover, and some later singles also "sample" big chunks from a 1964 Columbia-Princeton electronic music compilation. As always with the WCPAEB, there's some creepy touches in song titles & photos that belie Bob Markley's odd & by all accounts predatory personality.
