If a single person can be said to be responsible for the rise of site-specific sound installations, then Alvin Lucier's your man. A member of the Sonic Arts Union with Robert Ashley & Gordon Mumma, Lucier tried more than once to record the crackling radio waves caused by changes in the Earth's atmosphere. But it wasn't until the early 80s that he was successful. The second piece has Lucier rattling a bunch of percussion by stacking it against speakers, the cones of which he makes push in & out by hooking them up to an EEG machine & then looking around a room to change his brainwaves.
