The heady, skidding, corkscrews of be-bop come to voices. Dave Lambert had been a scatter for years, & was trying to build an all-scatting ensemble that could sound like a horn section. When the chorus members proved unswingin', he took the opposite tack & scaled down to just a trio. Versatile, silly, and as solidly jazz as an alto player nodding on the stand, they were soon arranging stuff like Miles Davis/Bill Evans for voice & improvising on Bird's changes. All that, and Annie Ross' bohemian calling card 'Twisted', wherein even the lyrics are bop, is here too. Tracklisting: What's This, A Cent and a Half, Perdido, Charge Account, Gussie G, Hawaiian War Chant, Jolly Jo, Twisted, Farmer's Market, Annie's Lament, Jackie, Four Brothers, Cloudburst, Standin on the Corner, Two for the Blues, Little Pony, One O'Clock Jump, Fiesta in Blue, Blues Backstage, Tickle Toe, Doodlin, The Spirit Feel, Lil Darlin, Rusty Dusty Blues, Popity Pop.
