Utterly enraged kill-whitey group poetry over conga bonks. Anti-bourgeoisie, anti-drugs, anti-hippie, and explicitly wishing that white people everywhere would choke on their thanksgiving fucking dinner. This 1st album (cluelessly issued with the 1984 cover here) hasn't dropped one single solitary tit of it's considerable power to terrify, electrify, & repaint you a radical color. The Poets were started on Malcolm X's birthday, & original members included the leader of the Puerto Rican gang the Young Lords. Group was soon taken over by folks out of a Harlem writer's workshop called 'East Wind', that included Abiodun Oeywole, Umar Bin Hassan & Jalal Mansur Nuriddin. At one point their inflammatory lyrics landed them on Nixon's Cointelpro list. They would go on to get arrested, get namedropped by white writers looking for antecedents to rap. Tension over who owned what in the 90s got bad enough that one member stabbed another in the neck. Gets more relevant every year that goes by, and I love 'Two Little Boys' every time when the guys all swoop up together on the word 'high'. Tracklisting: Run Nigger, On the Subway, Niggers are Scared of Revolution, Black Thighs, Gashman, Wake Up Niggers, New York New York, Jones Comin Down, When the Revolution Comes, Black Wish, Just Because, Two Little Boys, Surprises.
