Eminently loveable Beefheart with the potential to rejuvenate you at your most beaten, even if it was recorded quite late. Tougher, rougher, & more spiky shards of electric guitar than on 'Shiny Beast' (the other late album that's actually real good). Plenty of lyric images that could only come crawling out of Van Vliet's nostrils. Also uses some songs that were first written at the turn of 1970 but never used. Probably the only Beefheart record that causes people to do imitations (cosmic rule that somebody always tries 'aaaaaaaaaaaaaashtray heart' during any conversation about the cap'n). I s'pose that means it's more digestible, but no less visceral. Drumbo & Gary Lucas are in the backing band. Tracklisting: Hot Head, Ashtray Heart, A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets To A Diamond, Run Paint Run Run, Sue Egypt, Brickbats, Dirty Blue Gene, Best Batch Yet, Telephone, Flavor Bud Living, Sheriff of Hong Kong, Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on my Knee.
