Before the Islamic Revolution of the late 70s, Tehran was a burgeoning cosmopolitan city that didn't shy from Western influence. So just like everywhere else, the newly minted middle class had a need for music that was hip, young & forward looking. Something a little different than the traditional Iranian classical music on the radio. And that meant that kids started imitating the Beatles & the Shadows using a Persian scale. Next to Googoosh, Aref Arefkia was the most popular singer in Tehran during the 60s & 70s (he was voted so, along with her, in the Iranian answer to 'Tiger Beat' for 7 years in a row). Here's his first band's complete singles (one of which you might remember from 'Raks Raks Raks'). Accordion, tar, electric guitar & organ all wobble together in a beguiling, reedy 6/8. Tracklisting: Tulips, Beauty, Dancing Beauties, Heads or Tails, Haunting in the Mountains, Wyning for Girls, Naughty Lovers, Longhair Woman, Apologies, The Lost, Matador Come Back, Hey Girls, Sun Full Moon, Sad Man.
