One of the most powerful, sumptuous soundtracks ever recorded, period. Ennio Morricone's two-note calling card is likely just as famous as that of Beethoven's for 'Fur Elise'. Except that our Maestro has it played on recorder & bass ocarina (aka arghilofono) instead of some boring old piano. Sergio Leone had Morricone compose the music before filming began (which hadn't been done before) and played back the soundtrack while the actors worked. Leone also insisted that Van Cleef, Eastwood & Wallach were 3 sides of the same character, just like the trinity (ahem!), inspiring Morricone's lifelong habit of pushing a theme through innumerable arrangements within the same score. Note well the unbelievable variety of tempos, or the way that two unusual instruments will play a line in unison to make for an even stranger texture. Voices imitating coyotes, trumpets breaking fast enough to imitate machine guns (alongside woodblocks doing the same), surf guitar. And if you think you've heard this music before, take a minute to find out what Morricone does with bugle calls in 'Il Forte'. Tracklisting: Il Buono Il Brutto Il Cattivo, Il Tramonto, Sentenza, Fuga a Cavallo, Il Ponte di Corde, Il Forte, Inseguimento, Il Deserto, La Carrozza dei Fantasmi, La Missione San Antonio, Padre Ramirez, Marcetta, La Storia di un Soldato, Il Treno Militare, Fine di Una Spia, Il Bandito Monco, Duo Contro Cinque, Marcetta Senza Speranza, Morte di un Soldato, L'Estasi Dell'Oro, Il Triello.
