Boston's improvised music scene is among the best in the world, and here's 3 of the reasons why, all in one spot. Dave Gross (Grizzler, FETISH), Josh Jefferson (Skinny Vinny) & Steve Norton (Debris) writhe & weave around each other so tightly, I'm not sure you'd be able to tell who's who if they had instruments in different registers. Each of them comes from quite a different corner though: Dave has a really binary sense of timing & loves jumping into new contexts- always makes me think of Cornelius Cardew. Josh gets really burly braap textures & muscular pops that make even Mats Gustafsson's techniques seem polite. And Steve has that elegant Mingus-like sense of harmonic undertow/implication (comes from playing bass, I think) that you can hear even in the fastest runs. Live at Lou Cohen's house last spring (and if you don't know Lou, he's Boston's one & only septugenarian laptop composer). Tracklisting: Black Holes and Time Warps, Moving Right Along, Johnny Hodges Was From Boston.
