More than 50 years have gone by, and still, nobody but fucking nobody is better than Tudor at turning an ordinary instrument into a fantasy jujitsu match between a dishwasher & a plasma tv. The beleaguered pianos here are pointedly plonked, but also (on 'Variations II') zippered, gonged, routed & pulverized. Tudor's homemade circuts & turntable cartridges deliver textures as gravelly as any contact mic, and yet without the slightest hint of room sound or body- they seem like they're transmitted to your head directly from an alien land. Mostly pieces written especially for Tudor during the 50s, as he turns from serialism to aleatoric to full on noise improvisation in less than 10 years. Cage, Feldman & Chrstian Wolff do the writing, but mostly they just set Tudor up & let him go to town. Tracklisting: Music for Piano 27 (John Cage), Music for Piano 22 21 26 36 (John Cage, Music for Piano 27 21 32 36 (John Cage), Variations I (John Cage), Duo for Pianists (Christian Wolff), Duo for Pianists (Christian Wolff), Piano Piece for David Tudor (Sylvano Bussotti), Winter Music (John Cage), Piece for Four Pianos (Morton Feldman), Variations II (John Cage), Music for Piano 27 21 32 35 36 (John Cage), Music for Piano 21 22 26 29 34 36 (John Cage), Duo for Pianists (Christian Wolff), O-Ton.
