The bungee cord between Howlin Wolf & Captain Beefheart snaps back hard on this wah-slathered hard psych record, that has sitar, phasing, flute, etc. Inspired by the success of Hendrix, Chess got both this and a similar Muddy Waters album out the door. And though this is the better of the two, the negative statement on the cover ruined it's sales. Pete Cosey sneaks genius little smokin' licks in every which way, and for his trouble, Mister Chester Burnett supposedly told him, "Why don't you take them wah-wahs and all that other shit and go throw it off in the lake- on your way to the barber shop?" Tracklisting: Spoonful, Tail Dragger, Smokestack Lightning, Moanin at Midnight, Built for Comfort, Red Rooster, Evil, Down in the Bottom, Three Hundred Pounds of Joy, Back Door Man.
