Abidjan was a moneyed, diverse city in the late 70s & it attracted people from all over the continent, so the music of the city's bars was filled with competing languages & an explosion of musical styles. Pop-soul, afrobeat, Malian folk & traditional rhythms from Bete or Ako or Wolof songs. Musicians came in from Benin, Nigeria, Togo & Cameroon. But it sounds like every one of 'em was there to make tight organ or afrobeat slinkers. Take the Sumo Brothers 'I Love Music'; recorded in Ghana, the guys from the band played with Orchestre Poly Rythmo in Benin, and they mention in their lyrics how much they like Ray Charles & Jimmy Smith. Tracklisting: Pierre Antoine-Ye Man Noun, Okoi Seka Athanase-Me Houe Gnoun, Sumo Brothers-I Love Music, Nguenang-Wouck, Houon Pierre-Mansou Djouwi, Bony Castro-Labazo, Docteur Appia Morroh-Man Moeu, Charles Atangana & Emitais-Onguindo, Stainley Murphy-Kossopka, Francois Lougah-Bravo Sotra, Soro NGana-Mi Gnan Mi Nibi, Assale-Ameniwa, Martial Droubly & Ivoiro Star-Wanossa, Wey Len Nobel-Key Len Fecce.
