Slinky Gambian funk with mini-moog! Band existed during the mid-70s & had mostly broken up, but their records came out at the turn of the eighties as bootlegs. So they reformed briefly to capitalize & make a new recording- this one. The band began by mixing Otis Redding vamps with traditional Mandinka rhythms. When they got a new singer who sang in Wolof, they changed the name of the band to reflect the wolof name for a griot ('guewel'). Don't be put off by the late date or the vaguely putumao cover art (drawn by the guy who runs the label), as this is rippling, kaleidescopic 70s african psychedelia. Tracklisting: Yaye Ramoutoulaye, Balla Jigi, Tara, Sanehmentereng, Ouvaryea, Halleli N'Dakarou N'Diaye, Cilss, President Jawara Abdou Diouf, Cheddo, Werr Tullali Barr.
