They might well be the most psychedelic afrobeat band of them all. The much-beloved Funkees finally get a deluxe album treatment from the Soundway folks (who've featured them on many a compilation). The band was from Eastern Nigeria, Aba specifically, & met while playing in the Biafran army entertainment division. They recorded in Lagos, performed all over Nigeria, & eventually moved to London in the early 70s. Secret weapon Jake Sollo got started producing the Hykkers, & clearly excelled at playing chipped rhythm guitar & wild Prophet synthesizers. He unfortunately decided to leave the band to join Osibisa long about '77 & it was the beginning of the end for everybody. Truly heavy throughout, with schwings of fuzzed out electric guitar, killer swoops of minor key organ & seriously woozy percussion grooves. Tracklisting: Ole, Akpankoro, Onye Mmanya, Abraka, Akula Owu Onyeara, Acid Rock, Agbu Achara, Slipping Into Darkness, 303, Baby I Need You, Break Through, Life, Mimbo, Dancing Time, Dancing in the Nude, Point of No Return.
