Polyrhythmic dance music dominated by lilting tremolo guitar, smokin' minor key horns, & voices that ripple like a blade of grass. In the interest of fomenting nationalism, lots of African governments supported state-funded bands whose express purpose was to play traditional music on modern instruments. Cuban beats, American jazz, Islamic vocal styles, funk & lots more cropped up as the band settled into an urban environment. The Rail Band in particular was sponsored by Mali's national train company, & was the house band inside the company hotel. Griot performer Tidiana Kone was hired & the band ended up becoming a Yardbirds-style rite of passage for most of Mali's major musicians. Tracklisting: Rail Band, Mansa, Finza, Demba, Kankoun, Koro Koni, Kaira, Tie Diuguya, Dioula, Tiramakan, Konowale, Balakononifing, Dugu Kamaleba, Mamobo, Lanseny, Gnagna, Mamdou Boutiqui, Gansana.
