Kalinich was a poet who appeared at the Troubadour & other clubs around UCLA. He met Dennis Wilson, supposedly while pumping gas, and ended up contributing lyrics to some of the most luscious & sweetly beautiful Beach Boys songs (Dennis' 'Little Bird', for example). This record, unreleased until now, was produced by Brian Wilson at his house roughly around the time of the Leonard Bernstein documentary. Kalinich reads his poetry in a big rush through various types of echo. Sometimes he gets stark 12 string accompaniment, and once in a while Wilson himself sings angelic wordless lines in the background or quietly vamps on a church organ. Kalinich sings now & again too, but his outsider arrythmic delivery, cringing earnestness, & acidhead elementary school rhymes (which ultimately makes him a natural fit for the BB5) brings his style closer to Bobby Brown or Kenneth Higney than anything usually associated with the Beach Boys catalog.
