The year this and 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' were recorded, Ornette came from LA & took on a legendary 2 week stint at the Five Spot in NYC. The buzz got around that something different than bebop was afoot, and the gig turned out to last for most of the next 6 months. Though it caused some adverse reaction (Max Roach punched him in the face one night after getting off stage, for example), Coleman's quizzical & nimble melodies were bright & modern. While it hardly sounds free compared to Derek Bailey, it's still easy to hear a synthesis of flatted-fifth bebop intervals with the classy pedal points & smooth sophistication of modal jazz. Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins. Tracklisting: Ramblin, Free, The Face of the Bass, Forerunner, Bird Food, Uma Muy Bonita, Change of the Century.
