You can pick up an appreciation of just how laborious tape music making once was from this huge set of outtakes & rough drafts. Oram was a music engineer at the BBC, mixing together tiny lengths of tape on huge machines with big black knobs in the interest of getting particular whumping or beeping noises. She eventually left because she felt the BBC's interest in sound was too narrow, & ended up being a freelance sound effect creator for movies (incl. Kubrick's '2001'), installations, plays, etc. Perhaps the biggest suprise is that the sounds themselves are not the big & simple gestures or loops typical of early electronic music, but are moody, fluid and complex textures. No overlap with the previous 4lp set of her drawing-to-music invention 'Oramics'. Culled from the meticulously annotated personal archive of reel tapes she left after passing away in 2003. Tracklisting: Just For You, Eton, The Innocents: Savage Noises, Anchor Butter, Manchester 2, Wool, Oxford, Hydrogen Tones, 2001 Effects Tape 1, 2001 Effects Tape 2, Phensic, New Atlantis, Just For You, Winters Journey, Pulse Persephone, Light Music, Stroke, Shell Flight, Anacin Components, GOS, Costain Outtake, London University, Encephalagraph, Anacin, Hamlet, For Granada, Oramics Demonstration, Electronic Sound Patterns, Pure Tone Excerpts, Canadian Idyll, Hospital, Mermaid, Shell, Illustrations, Ursa Major, Ursa Major, Oddments, Osram & Rank/Pulse Persephone Experiment, Pulse Persephone Pitch Experiment, Sardonics, Progs, Barclays Bank, Birth of Baby, Speech Test.
