Glossy magazine people always like 'Underwater Moonlight' better, but I think as soon as Hitchcock opens with the line "feel like asking a tree for an autograph", he's swept together the surreal & literate fragility of Barrett-ish psychedelia, a nearly blinding sense of melody, and even the the breezy sneer of punk rock. Straightforward production inspired by the Beatles' double 4-tracking. In fact, lots more late-Beatlesness here generally than on some other Hitch titles, but it's always employed as a device to keep you off balance rather than comfortable. Not so easy to show the pristine pop sensibilities on your sleeve while you're standing amidst a bunch of gob-snuffling punks wearing safety pins, but I s'pose that's why they called themselves soft boys. Original tracklisting. Tracklisting: Give It to the Soft Boys, The Pigworker, Human Music, Leppo and the Jooves, The Rats' Prayer, Do the Chisel, Sandras Having Her Brain Out, Return of the Sacred Crab, Cold Turkey, School Dinner Blues, Wading Through a Ventilator.
