Keening, nasal harmonies that scald deeper than any brimstone. The Louvin Brothers performed on the Opry for 8 years during the height of it's power, but this album remains their signature. Radical in it's singular severity, & recognized as such ever since the Byrds covered it on 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo'. The indelible cover was designed by Ira, whose fervor for singing against drunkenness was matched only by his thirst for liquor. While younger brother Charlie was easygoing and lived to the age of 83 happy as a clam, Ira sometimes smashed his mandolin onstage in angry fits. Ira's 3rd wife shot him 6 times in 1963. He lived, only to be killed 2 years later by a drunk driver while he himself was on the lam from a DUI warrant. Comes with a whole extra disc that gives an overview of the rest of the Louvins' career. Tracklisting: Satan Is Real, There's a Higher Power, The Christian Life, The River of Jordan, The Kneeling Drunkard's Plea, Are You Afraid to Die, He Can Be Found, Dying From Home and Lost, The Drunkard's Doom, Satan's Jeweled Crown, The Angels Rejoiced Last Night, I'm Ready to Go Home.
