The plot of countless Bollywood movies happened in real life at least once, when a bunch of kids pounded on western-style guitars at a concert hall in Bombay that was full to the rafters. A cigarette company that was looking to capture younger buyers sponsored a battle of the bands for a couple of fleeting years. Amitabh Bachchan's wife gave out the awards to the winners. They issued recordings as a promotional tool, and inadvertently captured some of the only non-Bollywood psychedelic rock in India. And the records sound like little else. Grimy and fun garage influenced by the San Fran scene in the US, but rougher & fuzzier. The bludgeoning X'Lents' 'Born on the Bayou' is, to my ear, the highlight of the whole set. Tracklisting: Confusions-Voice From the Inner Soul, Dinosaurs-You Can't Beat It, X'Lents-Psychedelia, Innerlite-Zomba's Dance, Genuine Spares-Proper Stranger, Genuine Spares-What's Goin On, Dinosaurs-Sinister Purpose, Great Bear-Mist, X'Lents-Born on the Bayou, Innerlite-Baby Baby Please.
