Tight, peppy, bouncing 78s from a library founded in South Africa by Hugh Tracey in the mid 1950s. You can hear the hep influence of the Andrews Sisters, Cab Calloway, & the Ink Spots right there amidst the Zulu, Swazi and Sotho folk sounds. Brightly melodic & skips what would be the blue notes in a western scale- which is what makes everything sound like a scruffy, reefer-smoking cousin of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. Compiled by the blog Soul Safari, which specializes in South African sounds. Gotta be the happiest record in the shop, & very likely to leave you whistling. Tracklisting: Skylarks with Miriam Makeba-Ekoneni, Sophtown Cool Seven-Sophtown Special, Lulu Sibeko & Sedgewick Brothers-Tholi Bare, Skylarks with Miriam Makeba-Inkomo Zodwa, Spokes Mashiyane & his Golden Saxophone-Bothe Bothe, Cowboy Superman & his Cowboy Sisters-Inhlizyiyo Yam, Abafana Flute Jive-Bra Zacks, Doris Mkhize & the Cement Mixers-Nanku, Abafana Flute Jive-7 Up Swing, Josiah Khuzwao & his String Band-Emkhumbane, Lulu Sibeko & Sedgewick Brothers-Chaba Chaba, Martindale All Stars-Thakane, Harmony Crew Shirts-Amanye Madoda, Richard Nombali-Kwela Rich, Sample Siroqo-Baya Vuma.
