There are suppsoedly 40 bass players in Cachao's family, and he started playing an upright that must've been twice his size along with silent movies at the age of 9. He played under Herbert von Karajan in the late 40s and along with his brother Orestes on piano (who appears here) he invented the mambo in the early 50s. But these days his biggest contribution is the invention of descargas, traceable to this particular album. The word doesn't indicate a particular rhythm (even though it sometimes gets used that way in looser contexts), just a way of saying that these spurts of Cuban swing + hard bop have just as many tight corners & racy curves as anything being played across town at Birdland. Tracklisting: Tombon Criollo, Controversia de Metales, Estudio en Taompeta, Guajeo de Saxos, Oye Mi Tres Montuno, Malanga Amarilla, Cogele el Golpe, Pamparana, Descarga Cubana, Goza Mi Trompeta, A Gozar Timbero, Sorpresa de Flauta, Oguere Mi China, Es Diferente, Descarga Mambo, Descarga General, La Inconclusa, Redencion, El Manisero, Descarga Mexicana, Popurrit de Congas, Descarga Guajira, La Luz.
