Shepp's first for Impulse, considered extremely progressive upon release sheerly for the fact that it took 'Giant Steps' era Trane seriously. With the low key tempos & solos that slur notes rather than reject or double them, it's closer to ballads than fire music for contemporary ears. Does have some pretty fascinating arrangements of the songs however, as they're now being played by 4 brass fellas instead of one. John Tchicai, Roswell Rudd, Reggie Workman, Wayne Shorter's brother Alan, notes by Leroi Jones/Amiri Baraka. Tracklisting: Syeeda's Song Flute, Mr Syms, Cousin Mary, Niema, Rufus.
