Cohran spent time in Sun Ra's Arkestra & was an early associate of the AACM, but he's in a pretty traditional mood here, though a nicely spooky one. Piece was written 3 years earlier in 1965, & looks towards mid-60s Coltrane & Davis' 'Sketches of Spain' in about equal measure. Bass player Louis Satterfield is really the leader on the record, as the arrangement has stark sections that suprise considering the large size of the ensemble. Musette played by Charles Handy has a long solo that mimics arabian double reed playing. Pete Cosey is the guitarist, but he's unfortunately relegated to the background.
