King of Kollywood Ilaiyaraaja's 80s soundtracks strike an intoxicating balance between sleazy synths & nimble, birdlike melodies. Scores to Tamil Nadu action flicks where nearly everyone wore headbands & lots of choreographers were keen to knock off Michael Jackson. Ilaiyaraaja responds with swipes of Dvorak, or a play of choppy rhythms & electronic drums that might evoke carnatic classical music one minute, & boomboxes & legwarmers the next. A couple of songs are performed in English, and one features Lata Mangeshkar singing in Tamil (which she doesn't speak). Tracklisting: Kamal Hassan-Vikram, Mano-Adi Rani Mangama, Instrumental Music, Anuradha-Baby, Vani Jairam/M Vasudevan/G Amaran-Pala Rathiri, SP Balasubrahmaniam/S Janaki-Chittu Kuruvi, Yesudas/Vani Jairam-Disco King, Malaysia Vasudevan/SP Sailaja-Pattu Engey, Francis Lazarus-One Two, Ilaiyaraaja-Raja Rajadhi Raja, Malaysia Vasudevan/Chithra-Pavala Malligai, Chitra-Ninnukkori, Love Theme on Computer, SP Balasubrahmaniam-I Want To Tell You Something, SP Balasubrahmaniam-I Want To Tell You Something, SP Balasubrahmanyam/Lata Mangeshkar-Valaiyosai, SP Balasubrahmanyam/Chitra-Vaa Veliye.
