Les Six were a clique of composers who spent 1920s Paris under the spritely sway of both Jean Cocteau & Erik Satie. They found the previous generation's heroes, namely Debussy & Ravel, stuffy & overly perfumed, & so tended towards breezy little songs that incorporated circus music, jazz, & other low class trash. Many years hence, their style is a little more dry than Nino Rota, but at their best (like Auric's soundtrack to 'Beauty and the Beast'), the gently surreal orchestral tendrils wrap like soft chiffon around the stark black & white images of Cocteau's films. Tracklisting: Germaine Teilleferre-Overture for Orchestra, Arthur Honegger-Pacific 231, Arthur Honegger-Pastorale D'Ete Poeme Symphonique, Francis Poulenc-Les Biches, Darius Milhaud-Suite for Violin Clarinet & Piano, Darius Milhaud-Le Boeuf sur le Toir or the Nothing Doing Bar, Georges Auric-Orphee, Georges Auric-La Belle et La Bete, Georges Auric-L'Aigle a Deux Tetes, Louis Durey-Le Printemps au Fond de la Mer Poeme of Cocteau.
