Blind Joe Death's short, knotted & reference-filled tunes transmigrate into long, billowing mindblowers on this album, and that alone makes it one of the most fascinating in Fahey's catalog. Intended as a double but after a test pressing this one was originally issued as a single lp (Fahey didn't think it would sell). The rest of the tracks came out on cd in 1998, but they cut 2 minutes from 'Mark 1:15', which Fahey is often quoted as calling one of the best songs he ever wrote. Patton, Skip James, Dvorak, Sam McGee, and a couple of cajun records all get ripped off. Fahey's ability to push the timing of a song around while playing it is on full gleaming display, and he makes his guitar sound like chimes, trains, harps, harpsichords, out of tune banjos, and of course turtles. Tracklisting: Jesus Is a Dying Bed Maker, Amazing Grace, Song #3, Special Rider Blues, Dvorak, Jesus Is a Dying Bed Maker, Finale, America, Dalhart Texas, The Voice of the Turtle, The Voice That Carried Us Away & Then a Mosquito Came and Ate Up My Sweetheart, Mark 1:15, Knoxville Blues.
