Long before he blew the stars out with the Arkestra, Sun Ra worked in Chicago in the lower echelons of doo wop. Playing piano behind Screamin Jay Hawkins knock offs, collecting acolytes, and trying to get his space themed music into gear. The starts and sputters here (most of them on Saturn 7 inches) are fascinating. First off, they take the most mysterious one's tenets down to earth (because, after all, saying that you're from Saturn is more sensible as long as you've got a turban on your head first). Also, you get a fly on the wall view of Sun Ra's nascent band-running practices. It's easy to see why he thought he needed to live with his band once you hear them work out their dip-da-dips.
